Noelle and her daughter Olivia work side by side: Olivia runs the social media and behind-the-scenes work, while Noelle is the talented seamstress who guides a vintage chain stitch machine to create custom embroidery, one-of-a-kind pieces, and live embroidery experiences at events. Their process is personal by design: every piece is worked out with the person it's for in mind, not selected from a digital library and reproduced on command.

What Is Freehand Chainstitch Embroidery?
Chain stitch is among the oldest embroidery techniques in the world, appearing across European, Asian, and Middle Eastern textile traditions for more than two thousand years. Each stitch loops through the one before it, forming a continuous, raised line with a texture and dimension that a flat machine stitch simply can't replicate.
The "freehand" part of the craft has its own history. In the 1860s, French engineer Antoine Bonnaz developed the first machine capable of chain stitch embroidery, and Ercole Cornely later refined the design in Paris, expanding it to produce both chain and moss stitches. These machines were exhibited at the Paris Expositions Universelles in 1889 and 1900, and they represented something new in embroidery: fast enough to be practical, yet still entirely dependent on the hands guiding the fabric beneath the needle.
That dependence on the human hand hasn't changed. A chainstitch machine has no memory, no pattern file, and no automatic stitch placement. The operator moves the fabric under a stationary needle, drawing the design in real time, the way one might draw with a pen. The result is that no two pieces are ever exactly alike. A monogram stitched on one day won't be pixel-for-pixel identical to the same monogram stitched on another, and that variation is the point. It's the same quality that separates a hand-thrown ceramic bowl from one pulled off a mold: what's being purchased isn't a copy, but something that passed through someone's hands on its way into the world.
